[How to] Root Galaxy S6 using CF Auto-Root tool and Install CWM recovery

Samsung has recently launched its new flagships i.e. Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge. If you have got your hands on them, you surely now wish to enjoy the handsets to their full with root access. Through root access, you will be able to install unofficial custom ROMs and add new features to your device. Before you begin, you need to install ClockWorkMod recovery tool so that you can root Galaxy S6 later on. Here is the guide for both the procedures i.e. installing the CWM recovery and rooting the device.

Pre-requisites:

Before you begin, you need to consider following list of points:

  • Install USB drivers for Samsung Galaxy S6 on your PC. [ Download Here ]
  • Enable USB Debugging mode on your device. This can be done by heading to Settings > About and tapping 7 times on build number to enable Developer’s options. Then, navigate to Developer Options to enable the USB debugging mode.
  • Back up the personal contents and files on your device. Click here to do so.
  • You should have more than 80 percent battery on your device. So that, you can carry out the process smoothly and without any interruption.

Files Required:

Here are the files that are needed to install CWM and root Galaxy S6:

  • ClockworkMod recovery tool [ NEW LINK WILL BE ADDED SOON ]
    • (ignore CWM and head to root procedure, you can install CWM later on)
  • Odin3 v3.09
  • ChainFire Auto-Root tool [ SM-9200 , SM-920F , SM-920I , SM-920T ]

Steps to Install CWM recovery on Galaxy S6:

Here is the step-by-step guide for installing CWM on Galaxy S6:

  1. Switch off your Galaxy S6.
  2. Reboot it in Download mode. To do so, press and hold Volume Down + Home + Power key simultaneously till a warning message appears.
  3. Now, press the Volume Up key to continue.
  4. Install ODIN tool v3.09 on your PC.
  5. Launch the ODIN tool on your PC.
  6. Connect your Galaxy S6 with PC via USB cable.
  7. Wait till the ODIN tool recognizes the device and ID:Com section turns blue or yellow.
  8. Now on ODIN, click on AP button.
  9. Browse for CWM recovery file on your PC and click on ‘Start’ button.
  10. Once the installation is completed, your device will now reboot.

Now, you have successfully installed CWM recovery on your Galaxy S6. You can now enjoy custom ROMs and root access on your device.

How to root Galaxy S6 Using ChainFire Auto-Root tool:

Before you begin, read this important note:

WE WILL NOT BE RESPONSIBLE IF YOU END UP BRICKING YOUR DEVICE. ALSO, YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO CLAIM WARRANT AND USE SAMSUNG PAY AFTER THE ROOT. THIS IS BECAUSE THE METHOD WILL TRIP SAMSUNG KNOX SECURITY.

Here are the instructions to root Galaxy S6:

  1. Turn off your Galaxy S6.
  2. Reboot it in Download mode. To do so, simply press and hold Volume Down + Home + Power key simultaneously till a warning message appears.
  3. Now, press the Volume Up key to continue.
  4. Launch the ODIN tool on your PC.
  5. Extract the contents of CF Auto-Root tool on your PC.
  6. Connect your Galaxy S6 with PC via USB cable.
  7. Wait till the ODIN tool recognizes the device and ID:Com section turns blue or yellow.
  8. Now on ODIN, click on PDA button.
  9. Browse for the zipped CF Auto-Root file on your PC.
  10. Make sure that Auto-Root and F, Reset Time are checked, click on ‘Start’ button.
  11. Once the installation is completed, your device will now reboot. The ID:Com section on the tool will turn ‘Green’ indicating that your device have been rooted. A ‘Pass’ message will also be displayed.

You have now successfully rooted Galaxy S6. If you are unable to boot in normal mode after the root, here is what to do. In this case, you need to Factory Reset your device. To do so, turn off the device. Boot the device in ‘Recovery Mode’. Select ‘Wipe Data/Factory Reset’ option. Confirm and reboot the device in ‘Normal Mode.
